SOUTH SHORE — A new Walgreens pharmacy is coming to South Shore, according to Ald. Leslie Hairston (5th).

Building permits for a new Walgreens at 2351 E. 71st St. were issued April 21, worrying neighbors that the other location — a half-mile away at 7109 S. Jeffery Blvd. — would close.

Hairston said Wednesday that she had talked to the building owner and confirmed the new Walgreens will operate as a standalone pharmacy and the current Walgreens will stay.

“It’s at capacity in terms of goods and services they supply,” Hairston said, welcoming the new location to South Shore.

The owner of the building could not be reached for comment.

The entire first floor of the corner retail space will undergo $264,717 in renovations, according to building permits issued by the city.

Hairston said she hoped the new location would offer delivery, but the full range of services that will be offered was still unknown.

Representatives for Walgreens were not immediately able to say what the new store would offer or when it would open.

A new laundromat is also expected to open in the small retail center in the coming months.
