MORGAN PARK — No one was hurt Monday morning after a crew broke a natural gas line just one block from where a home had previously exploded after a similar accident, according to a foreman on the scene.
Jim Elian of GSC Consultants Inc. said his workers struck the pipe at 7:40 a.m. Monday at 108th Place and Hoyne Avenue in Morgan Park. Gas service was shut down shortly thereafter, he said.
The excavation crew was installing a water supply line at the quiet intersection a block from a home burned down after a similar accident on Dec. 2, 2014.
The home at 2142 W. 107th Place in Morgan Park erupted into flames after the accident that occurred while a water line was being installed. No one was hurt, but the fire claimed the home of Darlene Sheahan, a teacher at Sutherland Elementary School in Beverly, and the Sheahan family dog, Molly, a black Labradoodle, died from smoke inhalation.
Ald. Matt O'Shea (19th) sent a tweet at 10:17 a.m. Monday saying 21 customers were without gas service after the accident.
Elian said the excavation crew relied on markings placed on the street as a guide to the location of the underground pipe. These marking were nearly 7 feet off the mark, he said.
"It's bad luck, if you will," Elian said.
