WICKER PARK — Police in Wicker Park, Bucktown and Logan Square will be giving extra attention to drunken driving and safety violations this weekend.

The DUI Strike Force Patrol will start at 7 p.m. Saturday and end at 3 a.m. Sunday, according to the Chicago Police Department.

Shakespeare (14th) District cops plan to "saturate a pre-designated area with roving police officers that continually monitor vehicular traffic for signs of impaired driving," officials said.

Patrols also place emphasis on speed, alcohol-related and safety belt violations. Police vehicles equipped for speed detection are deployed to apprehend speeding violators.

Officers may conduct breath alcohol tests and charge people with DUIs on the spot, and those cited may be taken to the nearest jail or released with a promise to appear in court.

During a DUI strike force last weekend in Rogers Park, there were 109 citations given out. Of those, 37 were license violations, 14 were unsafe vehicle violations, 13 were insurance-related, 11 were safety belt violations, and 34 were unrelated traffic violations.

Only one car was towed then and no one was ticketed for driving under the influence, police said.
