COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A Logan Square man tried to evade arrest Sunday by stabbing a Chicago Police officer in the face with a fork, prosecutors said.

Luis Ramirez, 49, was promptly arrested — and the officer was treated for puncture wounds and bleeding on his left cheek, court records show.

Ramirez was wanted for a February attack inside the Target at Elston Avenue and Logan Boulevard, according to prosecutors and a witness.

He was able to get away after kicking and punching a cashier in February at the store at 2656 N. Elston Ave., police said. But on Sunday, a 26-year-old man who witnessed that attack spotted Ramirez in the square eating a meal outside near the Eagle monument.

The witness called police, who arrived in the 2500 block of North Kedzie Avenue about 4:45 p.m. hoping to arrest Ramirez, according to an arrest report.

Ramirez wasn't having it.

He stabbed one officer in the face with a metal fork before flailing his arms and legs to avoid being handcuffed, the arrest report said. The officers called for backup, court records show, and one officer needed to be treated for a strained hamstring.

The Logan Square-based Twitter account @LSqFNB on Sunday posted a photo of the arrest that was later taken down.

In addition to the initial battery charge from February, Ramirez now faces charges of aggravated battery to a peace officer, battery causing bodily harm and resisting arrest.

During a bond hearing this week, Ramirez shook his head as prosecutors detailed the allegations against him. Cook County Judge Laura Sullivan set bail at $90,000.
