Need Help Managing Your Money? Get Smart At These Workshops

EDGEBROOK — Far Northwest Side residents can learn how to get their financial affairs in order at a series of events workshops scheduled to take place at Chicago Public Library branches starting Saturday.

Organized by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, Money Smart Week, which ends April 30, is designed to help Chicagoans "understand the business of money, gain control of their finances and overall wealth management."

All of the workshops are free and reservations are not required. The events on the Far Northwest Side are:

Wills and Trusts: Representatives of the Law Offices of Jacob Ehrensaft will discuss wills, trusts, powers of attorney, probate and how to choose a guardian to make healthcare and financial decisions at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Edgebrook branch, 5330 W. Devon Ave.; at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Austin-Irving branch, 6100 W. Irving Park Road; and at 1 p.m. April 30 at the Oriole Park branch, 7454 W. Balmoral Ave.

Five Money Questions for Women: Representatives of Edward Jones will discuss the "unique" financial circumstances that women can face at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Edgebrook branch, 5330 W. Devon Ave.

Aging In Place: Dale Tippett, a real estate broker; Joyce Sison, of Better Choice Home Health; and Flora Prieto, a real estate specialist, will discuss how to avoid downsizing or moving to senior housing during retirement at 6:30 p.m. Monday, at the Austin-Irving branch, 6100 W. Irving Park Road.

Retirement by Design: Representatives of Edward Jones will discuss how to craft a retirement strategy and stay on track at 4 p.m. April 26 at the Edgebrook branch, 5330 W. Devon Ave.

Credit: the Good, the Bad and the Ugly: Representatives of Waddell & Reed will discuss the importance of credit scores, what they are based on and how to improve them at 6:30 p.m. April 27 at the Edgebrook branch, 5330 W. Devon Ave.

Homeowners and Taxes: Representatives of the Cook County Assessor’s Office and the IRS will discuss property tax exemptions and federal income tax deductions for homeowners at 6:30 p.m. April 27 at the Portage-Cragin branch library, 5108 W. Belmont Ave.

Real Estate Investing: Forum Mortgage Bancorp senior loan officer Dennis O'Donoghue will discuss how to obtain federal loans to renovate investment properties at 6:30 p.m. April 27 at the Austin-Irving branch, 6100 W. Irving Park Road and at 6 p.m. April 28 at the Roden branch, 6083 N. Northwest Highway.

Preparing for the Unexpected: Representatives of Preferred Planning Concepts will discuss then 10 documents that will protect your relatives in the event of an unforeseen emergency at 4 p.m. April 28 at the Edgebrook branch, 5330 W. Devon Ave.

Planning and Saving for College: Representatives of Edward Jones will discuss setting a college savings goal and strategies to reach it as well as benefits of various education plans at 10:30 a.m. April 29 at the Edgebrook branch, 5330 W. Devon Ave.

Property Taxes Too High? Representatives of Raila and Associates will discuss how to lower property taxes, get tax exemptions, refunds and understand market value reassessment notices at 2 p.m. April 30 at the Edgebrook branch, 5330 W. Devon Ave.
