WICKER PARK — Cookie delivery joint Insomnia Cookies has opened its much anticipated Wicker Park location.
Located in the former iCream storefront at 1537 N. Milwaukee Ave., Insomnia Cookies, which will deliver warm cookies to doorsteps until 3 a.m., offers several varieties of cookies, as well as brownies, cookie sandwiches and cold milk.
The Wicker Park menu also offers ice cream sundaes and ice cream by the pint and quart.
Pickup/carryout hours are 11 a.m. to 3 a.m. daily; delivery starts at noon. The minimum order for delivery is $6.
The Wicker Park location joins the city's two other Insomnia Cookies: in Lincoln Park, at 2260 N. Lincoln Ave., and Rogers Park, at 6470 N. Sheridan Ave.
The 87-store chain got its start in college towns, beginning in 2003 when the company began out of a University of Pennylvania off-campus house . It was founded by Seth Berkowitz.
Berkowitz has said that living with a houseful of guys who were often looking to eat in the middle of the night helped give him the idea for the cookie business. He and his then-girlfriend, now-wife developed the formula for the cookies.
He was overwhelmed when his business took off. The summer after he graduated, he opened up three more shops.
"It took me a few years to figure out the best way to scale it. I had no idea what I was doing. It was on-the-job training for a few years," he told Inc. magazine. "As a college student, you are very idealistic."
Just south of Wicker Park's Milwaukee, Damen and North avenues intersection, Insomnia Cookies' third Chicago spot is next to Fluevog Shoes and Goorin Bros., a hat shop.
The spokeswoman said the new location will be the chain's 87th. Once open, it will employ 15-20 local employees, she said. Insomnia Cookies has corporate offices in New York City and Philadelphia.
