SOUTH SHORE — Musician Ken Vandermark is debuting new music on April 27 inspired by Chicago’s art movement, which is currently is getting a major retrospective at the Smart Museum of Art.

Vandermark will perform a free show at 7 p.m. April 27 at the Stony Island Arts Bank, 6760 S. Stony Island Ave.

The concert of new compositions and improvisations is part of the “Monster Roster: Existentialist Art in Postwar Chicago,” a mid-century movement in Chicago with a much more psychological bent as abstraction continued to dominate much of the art world.

Vandermark will perform on reed instruments and be joined by Tim Barnes on percussion, Nick Macri on acoustic and electric bass, Lou Mallozzi on turntables and electronics and Mars Williams on saxophones.

The concert is free and open to the public, but space is limited and visitors are asked to register on the event website.
