CHICAGO — Four people were critically injured when an apartment building caught fire in Lakeview overnight Friday, according to the Fire Department.

The fire broke out in an apartment complex in the 3400 block of North Janssen Avenue around 1:50 a.m. Friday, said Cmdr. Frank Valez, a Chicago Fire Department spokesman.

Crews arriving on the scene at 1:55 a.m. learned that people were trapped inside the burning building, Velez said. The department rescued two people from inside the building, he said.

Two more people had to jump from the building to escape the fire, Velez said.

Those four people were the only ones injured in the fire, Velez said. Two were brought to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and the other two were brought to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, he said. They were listed in critical condition, he said.

Fire Department investigators remained on the scene Friday morning working to determine the cause of the fire as well as the extent of damage.
