MOUNT GREENWOOD — George Handler swept away the remaining debris from a house fire next door Monday morning in Mount Greenwood.

His neighbor's home at 10346 S. Christiana Ave. filled with smoke around 10:45 p.m. Sunday evening, said Handler, who has lived in his home for 52 years.

The Chicago Fire Department confirmed Monday that no one was injured in the fire.

Attempts to reach the homeowner were unsuccessful. Handler described his neighbor as a woman in her mid-50s who lived alone. She has lived in the block nearly as long as he has, Handler said.

He said the fire appeared to have begun in the basement and quickly filled the modest home on the Far Southwest Side with smoke.

"There was a lot of smoke until they broke the windows," said Handler, adding firemen used water from three hoses to put out the fire.

Outside of the home, the smell of the extinguished fire permeated the air. The windows were all boarded up and several vent holes cut into the roof were sealed with boards too.

Handler said that there was no damage to his home as a result of the fire.
