World Irish Dance Championship Honors Go To Local Performers

MOUNT GREENWOOD — Several neighborhood students took home trophies at the Irish Dancing Commission’s World Championships in Glasgow, Scotland.

Among the winners of the contest held March 23-27 was an eight-person team in the Under-16 category. Five Marist High School students were part of the team including freshmen Karen Folan, of suburban Chicago Ridge, Alyssa Hoban, of suburban Homer Glen, and Megan Wagner, of suburban Palos Heights.

Also on the team were Marist sophomores Grace O'Brien and Kiley Ross, both of suburban Palos Heights. Other members of the team were Tara Campbell, a student at Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School in Mount Greenwood and Olivia and Anna McMahon, eighth-graders at Mokena Junior High in southwest suburban Mokena.

The girls study at the Lavin-Cassidy School of Irish Dancing in suburban Worth.

Stephanie Kohn, a senior at Marist in Mount Greenwood, and her brother Kyle, of suburban Lemont, also competed. The pair were part of a 20-person troupe that took first place in the dance drama category.

The Kohns dance with Mullane Healy Godley Irish Dance Academy in Edison Park. Stephanie has danced for 15 years.
