COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A homeless man needed 40 stitches to his face after a friend repeatedly beat him with a glass bottle in the Loop, prosecutors said Thursday.

Stanley Riley, 55, has been charged in the violent attack, which took place about 9 p.m. Monday.

The victim, a 50-year-old man, suffered a broken orbital bone, cheekbone, finger and back, according to Assistant State's Attorney Erin Antonietti, who spoke during a bond hearing Thursday.

Riley and the victim, who've been friends for about a year, were drinking in an alley in the 200 block of South State Street when Riley accused the victim of stealing his watch, prosecutors said.

The two got into an argument, which soon turned physical, Antonietti said.

According to an arrest report, Riley repeatedly punched his friend before beating him with a glass bottle. The report says Riley is 6-foot-1 and weighs 350 pounds.

When police arrived, Riley allegedly confessed to the attack, saying, "Yeah, I beat his a--," court records show.

The victim lost a large amount of blood, suffered multiple contusions and needed 40 stitches to his face, police and prosecutors said.

According to Antonietti, both Riley and the victim are homeless. Riley's public defender said Riley has had "stable housing" for two years. Court records place his address in South Austin.

Riley is charged with aggravated battery causing great bodily harm and aggravated battery in a public place.

Cook County Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil on Thursday ordered him held in lieu of $100,000 bail.
