COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A suburban man has been charged in the 2013 murder of Shawntina Burpo.

The fatal shooting stemmed from an ongoing gang war between the Killa Ward faction of the Gangster Disciples and the Terrordome faction of the Black P-Stones, prosecutors said.

That's the same rivalry that would eventually lead to the 2015 murder of 9-year-old Tyshawn Lee, the Tribune reported.

Burpo, 29, was gunned down during a drive-by shooting in the 7900 block of South Wood Street about 11:55 p.m. Sept. 19, 2013, according to Assistant State's Attorney Jamie Santini, who spoke during a bond hearing Thursday.

The woman had been standing with several Gangster Disciples when someone in a dark-colored sedan opened fire.

Prosecutors believe the shooter was 30-year-old Kristian Taylor, an admitted member of the rival P-Stone gang. According to Santini, Taylor fired a single shotgun blast that struck Burpo in her abdomen.

Burpo was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead about 4:18 a.m. the following morning, the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office said.

Multiple witnesses later identified Taylor as the shooter, according to prosecutors, and police learned that Taylor had fled to southern Illinois.

Taylor was arrested this week in suburban Springfield and charged with first-degree murder.

Cook County Judge Peggy Chiampas on Thursday ordered Taylor held without bail.
