UPTOWN  — A 22-year-old man was shot near the Uptown branch of the Chicago Public Library Monday morning.

Around 10:20 a.m., the man was walking in the 900 block of West Buena Avenue when two men walked up and opened fire before running off, said Officer Janel Sedevic, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.

The man was shot in his chest and taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition, Sedevic said.

Detectives are investigating, Sedevic said.

Officers could be seen searching for shell casings and interviewing employees at the Bar on Buena Monday morning.

Last week, Ald. James Cappleman (46th) and Tom Tunney (44th) announced 26 more police officers have joined the Town Hall Dirstict over the past six months. Since October the officers — including eight sergeants — have joined the district, which covers Lakeview and parts of Uptown, Lincoln Square, North Center and Lincoln Park.

Neighbors in Lakeview and Uptown have voiced concern about a perceived increase in violent crime.

Officials also promised 10 more officers would be hired by the end of 2016.
