HUMBOLDT PARK — Following a "surge in violence" in Humboldt Park, Ald. Roberto Maldonado is calling an emergency meeting with police commanders.

Ald. Maldonado (26th) is hosting two emergency community meetings in the coming weeks with the first set for Tuesday night.

The meeting will be held at the Humboldt Park Field House, 1400 N. Sacramento Ave. at 6 p.m.

"I want ALL of us to express our outrage at this growing violence outside our homes and places of work," Maldonado wrote in an announcement of the meeting to constituents. "Faith in our police leadership can only be earned through effective, positive outcomes — not more of the same indifference."

Edward Kulbida, commander of the Near West 12th District, and the new Shakespeare 14th Acting District Commander Fabian Saldana will both be at the meeting.

The call for the emergency meetings followed a recent rise in violence in Humboldt Park, including multiple shootings last week that grabbed the alderman and neighborhood's attention.

There have been 41 shootings in the Humboldt Park community area this year, according to DNAinfo statistics, with 55 shooting victims. There have been 10 homicides in the community area so far this year.
