CHICAGO — A 22-year-old man was shot to death in Back of the Yards on Wednesday, dying even after witnesses tried to save him, police said.

The shooting victim has been identified as Alejandro Velazquez-Perez, of the 4100 block of South St. Louis Avenue, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

At 5:10 p.m., Velazquez-Perez was inside a car in the 1700 block of West 46th Street when he was shot in his side, leg and hand, police said.

People who witnessed the shooting moved the man to a different car and drove to the 4400 block of South Ashland Avenue, where they called paramedics, said Officer Janel Sedevic, a Chicago Police spokeswoman. The man was then taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Velazquez-Perez was a documented gang member, police said. Witnesses to the shooting were uncooperative with officers, they said.

No one was in custody.

The man's death came the same day that neighborhood leaders pleaded for help in stemming the escalating bloodshed that's happened this year in Back of the Yards.
