LAKEVIEW — A strip of restaurants on North Broadway will be forced to close next week as crews set up water service for the new Mariano's on Lakeview's east side.

The boil water order begins at 6 a.m. April 5 for businesses and homes between 3000 N. Broadway and 3174 N. Broadway — roughly from Wellington Avenue to just south of Belmont Avenue.

Affected restaurants include some Lakeview East gems, from Bib Gourmand staple Chilam Balam to the dainty, new-ish Mortar and Pestle

However, it's possible restaurants will be able to work around the order, lessening its impact on the corridor, said Maureen Martino, executive director of the Lakeview East Chamber of Commerce.

"It could be at night for a few hours or days, we're not sure yet," Martino said Tuesday morning. "It [hopefully won't] be for more than one day."

The boil order advisory states that "food establishments and medical centers are to be closed for the duration of the boil order." State Rep. Sara Feigenholtz shared the advisory on Twitter Monday afternoon.

There are some options for restaurants, like using water from disposable bottles or boiling all water used in the kitchen, said Ald. Tom Tunney (44th). It's also possible some restaurants will have shorter closures than others, depending on their proximity to the Mariano's complex.

Tunney estimated the work could take as little as a couple of hours to a couple of days, although it depends entirely on how quickly crews can connect the new building to water service.

"We've got to find the protocols to keep our businesses open during these disruptions," Tunney said. "We want to have contingency plans to try to mitigate, and that's something I've been working on for a long time."

Other restaurants in the impacted area: Flub A Dub Chub's, Stella's Diner, Taco & Burrito House, Lakeview Kitchen and Market, Tom Yum Cafe, Glaze Teriyaki Grill, Intelligentsia Coffee, Ceres' Table, Argo Tea Cafe, Wilde, Hatsu Hana, New Tokyo, Bahn Mi, Buena Vista, Jersey Mike's Subs, DryHop Brewers and Brendan's Pub.

Residents are advised to boil any water that will be consumed, including water for ice cubes, washing foods or dishes and brushing teeth, the Department of Water Management said.

The boil order is in effect indefinitely, until the water department finishes work and tests the street's water.

The water department was not immediately available for comment.

It's possible restaurants will only have to restrict their hours, but "we're not sure yet," Martino said. The work has been rescheduled a couple of times, but Martino said the Lakeview East chamber hadn't been told about the most recently issued advisory as of Tuesday morning.

The chamber will work with Tunney to "find the best way to do this with the least disruption to the businesses," she said.

Meanwhile, residents are asked to bring water to a full, rolling boil for at least five minutes. Boiled water can be stored at room temperature or refrigerated in a closed container. For questions, call 311 or 312-744-8190.
