Girl, 13, Grazed By Stray Bullet in North Lawndale, Police Say

NORTH LAWNDALE — A 13-year-old girl was grazed by a stray bullet on the West Side Sunday afternoon, police said.

Around 4:20 p.m., the girl was walking in the 1300 block of South Karlov Avenue when she heard gunshots and felt pain, according to Officer Ana Pacheco, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.

The girl was taken to Stroger Hospital, Pacheco said, where she was listed in good condition with a graze wound in her armpit.

Monique Elen, who lives on the block, said she was in her home when "some boys came by and started shooting." She didn't know the girl who was shot, she said, but she saw her "laid out" on the street and police arrived soon after.

Elen, a mother of six, said the shooting made her afraid for own family's safety.

"It's scary as hell," Elen said. "I keep trying to preach to my kids that these streets ain't a joke, but sometimes kids don't want to listen ... I just don't want to go on the Internet one day and see something's happened."

No one is in custody, Pacheco said.
