CHICAGO — Chicagoan David Morris' design of a possible new Illinois state flag generated dozens of comments from Neighborhood Square users.

Morris, of Dunning, thinks the current edition of the Illinois state flag, which has been flying since 1970, is "ugly" and thinks it should stand out more like Chicago's flag. He has the backing of one local politician, state Rep. Robert Martwick (D-Jefferson Park), who plans to introduce a bill early next year.

NSQ users' opinions varied wildly on the thought of a new state flag coming to Illinois.

User "greeneggs42" wrote: "Yes, Illinois (like a majority of states) has a horrible flag with a complicated seal in the middle that should be changed. Not sure I agree with Mr. Morris's design (the English Cross?), but we could do with a redesign. Something bold and simple, like Chicago's, or Ohio's or New Mexico's."

User "dsachase1" chimed in with: "I really love the new design!!! Morris is correct, this does represent the State of Illinois historically, maybe the State Shield should change as well!"

NSQ's "Nadiaxx" said: "No more flags with crosses on them, please!"

User "matt-johnson" wrote: "Looks like he created something in paint. The current flag is fine."

NSQ user "tim-buckley" said: "Here's an excellent talk on flag design. Chicago has one of the best flag designs, and one of my favorites. It would be great if Illinois also got one. In NYC we are really hurting for a great flag like Chicago's."

"LikeItIs" responded with: "Sorry, don't like the proposed new flag. Let's find out first if the citizenry thinks there should be a new flag or not. Then there should be a contest with additional flag designs submitted for vote."

And "pparic1" wrote: "It's worth looking into but I don't like the design of this proposed flag. The state is not spending anywhere anyway due to Gov. Rauner and Madigan's State Legislature bickering and not doing their jobs."
