BACK OF THE YARDS— Eight students from a Back of the Yards elementary school were taken to the hospital after they took pills brought to school by a fellow student, fire department officials said.

The students, who attend Seward Elementary School, 4600 South Hermitage Ave., took the medication after receiving them by another student, said Cmdr. Walter Schroeder, a Chicago Fire Department spokesman. The ages of the students were not released.

The students were taken to various hospitals. Their conditions were not released, but Schroeder said they were list as stable, Schroeder said.

District officials said in a statement that CPS was investigating the incident.

“CPS is taking this situation very seriously and our priority is to provide our students with a safe, healthy learning environment. School administrators immediately contacted emergency personnel and families of the affected students, and the incident is being thoroughly investigated,” Chicago Public Schools said in a statement obtained by CBS2.
