CHICAGO — A 27-year-old man was shot dead in South Shore Thursday evening, according to police.

The man was standing with a group in the 7800 block of South Yates Boulevard at 5 p.m. Thursday when someone walked up and opened fire, said Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago Police spokesman.

He was shot in his back and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he was ultimately pronounced dead, Estrada said.

The victim was identified as Paul Woods of the 8400 block of South Essex Avenue, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. His death was ruled a homicide.
