DOWNTOWN — On Wednesday, the Chicago Teachers Union announced plans for a one-day strike, calling on teachers and all Chicagoans who support them to skip work and take to the streets.
Their goal is to "bring attention to the fact that the governor, mayor and their other buddies [like billionaire] Ken Griffin are starving the city and state and feeding their millionaire and billionaire friends," union spokeswoman Stephanie Gadlin said.
Their message rang true for Democratic presidential hopeful and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who shared the DNAinfo story about the strike on Twitter and announced that local teachers have his support:
I stand with Chicago teachers. We shouldn't close schools and lay off teachers to reward Wall Street. https://t.co/4EH0myWyzw

Sanders will be in the area Friday, speaking to supporters at Argo High School in southwest suburban Summit. At the same time, GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump will host a rally at UIC that is expected to be packed with protesters.
Illinois is expected to be an easy win for Hillary Clinton on Tuesday, but Sanders may show more interest in the state following his win in Michigan, where Clinton was also expected to win but fell short.
