WEST RIDGE — An armed man wearing a trench coat stormed into a cleaners in West Ridge last month and threatened to shoot two children in the store if others inside didn't cough up more money than what was in the cash register, according to police.

The gunman entered the store at 6122 N. Ravenswood Ave. about 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 15 and ordered two women and a man to turn around while pointing a gun at them through his pocket, according to a police report of the incident.

He then went to the cash register and removed around $300 cash.

After emptying the register, the gunman turned back to the man and told him the cash wasn’t enough.

“Give me more money or I will shoot the kids,” he said, the man told police.

The man gave the robber $24 from his wallet, police said. Before leaving, one of the women attempted to look at the man’s face, but the gunman saw her staring.

“Turn around or I will kill the kids,” he said, the woman told police.

The gunman ran out of the shop and headed south on Ravenswood into an alley that runs north of Norwood Street, police said. The man had chased after the robber and from a distance saw him enter the alley. A black SUV sped from the area moments later, police said.

The store’s management told police they believed the man may have entered the shop earlier in the day and cased it before the robbery. Video surveillance was provided to detectives, according to the report.

Store employees declined to comment.

No arrests have been made.
