SOUTH DEERING — An off-duty police officer working security at a Far South Side auto impound lot was stabbed while trying to prevent a break-in early Monday morning, officials said.
Around 1:10 a.m. Monday, police said, the 22-year-old officer confronted a man who was trying to break into cars at the impound lot in the 10300 block of South Doty Avenue, according to Officer Ana Pacheco, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.
The man pulled out a knife and stabbed the officer in his face before fleeing, Pacheco said.
The officer was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, Pacheco said, where he was listed in serious condition.
Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford confirmed that the man is a police officer from Indiana, though he did not specify what department he worked for.
The man was "alert and talking" and being treated for "non-life threatening injuries" after being stabbed in his "head, face and upper body," Langford said.
No one is in custody, Pacheco said.
