'No Apologies' Event for Special Needs Families to Take Place Monthly

PORTAGE PARK — An event designed to give special needs families a chance to head out for a treat — without worry or apology — will take place monthly at Josi's Frozen Yogurt in the Six Corners Shopping District.

After the first event in February was a huge success, store owner Barbara Murphy decided to make it a monthly event.

The next event will take place from noon-3 p.m. March 20 at Murphy's kid-friendly restaurant at 4032 N. Milwaukee Ave.

The restaurant will be closed to everyone except families with children with mental or physical disabilities, with yogurt, pizza and chili for sale — without a side of apologies or pressure-filled, get-to-know-each-other games, Murphy said.

Reservations are not required, Murphy said. The Six Corners store's doors will be locked — to prevent kids from wandering away — and the restaurant's lights will dimmed to accommodate those with sensory-processing issues, she added.
