RIVER WEST — A man turned himself in after a fatal shooting inside a River West high-rise apartment building Wednesday night, police said.

Just after 7 p.m. Wednesday, a 45-year-old man was shot in the head after an argument with another man in the building in the 500 block of West Kinzie Street, according to Officer Ana Pacheco, a Chicago police spokeswoman.

The man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Pacheco said, where he was later pronounced dead.

The man was identified as Darrin Joss, who lived in the same block where he was killed, according to Cook County Medical Examiner's Office records. Joss was pronounced dead at 7:48 p.m. of multiple gunshot wounds in a homicide.

A witness told the Tribune the shooter, who used a wheelchair, approached Joss in the building's gym complex and shot him while he was on a treadmill.

"The guy [in a wheelchair] yelled at him to stop flirting with his girlfriend over and over again," Aaron Snyder, who was inside the gym, told the newspaper. "I thought he was being sarcastic, but he wasn't. They got into a screaming match. The guy just hung around him staring at him on the treadmill."

The building was then evacuated and SWAT officers carrying rifles arrived outside, according to other witnesses at the scene.

About an hour after the shooting, Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi tweeted that it was an "isolated shooting incident" and that detectives knew who the shooter was.

Charges are now pending for the shooter, Guglielmi said, who surrendered to police early Thursday morning.
