PORTAGE PARK — The deadline for parents, teachers and community members to run for Local School Councils across Chicago is 3 p.m. Friday, city officials said.

The councils are charged with approving schools' budgets while monitoring students' progress as measured by standardized tests and other benchmarks. In addition, councils have the power to hire — and fire — principals.

The 11-member councils are made up of six parents, two community members, two teachers and one school employee. High School councils also have a student member.

Candidates must submit nomination forms, which are available online, to the school by 3 p.m Friday, Chicago Public Schools officials said. Forms may not be emailed, submitted online or faxed to the school, officials said.

Candidates can also submit a statement detailing their qualifications for the position and their plans if elected, officials said.

Last year, so few candidates filed to run for the Local School Council elections, CPS officials extended the filing deadline.

The elections will take place from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. April 13 at elementary schools and from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. April 14 at high schools. Newly elected council members will start their two-year terms July 1.
