Englewood Groups Unite to Help Flint Water Crisis Victims

ENGLEWOOD — At least a dozen Englewood-based groups are working together to help provide 400 basic care kits for the elderly and disabled in Flint, Mich., who are dealing with the water crisis.

The groups are outraged over the public health emergency that caught national attention once it was discovered that the city's water was contaminated. The water was coming from the Flint River, which contained high levels of trihalomethanes, a byproduct of a disinfectant used to treat the water.

A notice was sent warning residents that over time, the chemicals could cause liver, kidney and nervous system problems, MLive Michigan reported. Many residents have already suffered from rashes and hair loss.

Several Englewood groups in Chicago are seeking donations so they can put together basic care kits and water for the elderly and disabled in Flint. These will go to those unable to travel to distribution centers in the city. The group is calling their initiative "Flint Lives Matter." They will deliver the items April 30.

They will collect the following items through April 23:

Assurance Premium Disposable Wash Cloths

• Baby wipes

• Baby oil

• Rinse free shampoo

• Dry shampoo

• Basic cleaner/clean face wash

• Simple foaming face wash

• Hand sanitizer

• Vitamin C drops

• Listerine tablets

• Cases of water

The items can be dropped off at, and monetary donations can be mailed to, Teamwork Englewood, 815 W. 63rd Street, 2nd Fl. Chicago, IL  60621, any time before April 23rd.
