EDISON PARK — The Far Northwest Side of Chicago — not far from where the eventual first lady, senator, secretary of state and Democratic presidential candidate grew up — is Hillary Clinton country, based on a DNAinfo analysis of 2016 campaign contributions.
While Clinton was born in Edgewater, she moved with her family to Park Ridge — just beyond Chicago's northwest border — when she was a toddler, and attended high school in the suburb.
Clinton's campaign took in more than twice the amount of money from residents of the Far Northwest Side than the campaign of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, according to the analysis.
But Sanders — whose campaign has been driven by small donations over the Internet — has almost double the number of individual donors from the Far Northwest Side.
That pattern is true for the city as a whole, with Clinton taking in $2.2 million from Chicagoans as compared with $387,000 for Sanders.
Sanders, who attended the University of Chicago, has more financial support than Clinton on the Southwest Side as well as in Rogers Park, Norwood Park and Belmont Cragin.
The endorsement of Ald. John Arena (45th), who represents Jefferson Park and parts of Portage Park, did not translate into campaign cash for Sanders. Clinton racked up $6,178 in donations from 43 contributors, while Sanders recorded $3,858 from 66 donors in the 60630 Zip Code, records show.
No other Far Northwest Side alderman has endorsed a candidate in the Illinois presidential primary, which takes place March 15.
