CHICAGO — Light but persistent snow is poised to muddle commutes across the city Thursday, according to National Weather Service forecasts.

A steady wave of morning snow will begin to taper off around midday, according to meteorologist Ben Deubelveiss. The exact time will vary for different parts of the city.

"Up by the northern suburbs this is probably going to stop sometime late morning, but by the south suburbs, it could stretch into mid-afternoon," he said.

So far, just over a half inch of snow has accumulated at O'Hare Airport, with "maybe another couple tenths of an inch" on the way, Deubelveiss said.

Whether the snow accumulates enough to affect traffic, Deubelveiss said, will depend on road temperatures.

"Right now, it looks like it's just about freezing, so it could go either way," he said.

The city deployed 200 snow plow trucks to Lake Shore Drive "and the main streets" Thursday morning, according to an announcement released by the Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation.

Meteorologists are also forecasting a similar blast of light snow Friday night into Saturday morning. Although it might still veer out of the city's way, the system looks poised to deliver a quantity of snow "in the same ballpark" as Thursday's inch or so.
