CHICAGO — The head of a Chicago high school administered first aid to a gunshot victim who ran into the school for help after being shot in the neighborhood.

Brenda Williams, executive director of Camelot Academy, gave first aid to the 23-year-old man until an ambulance arrived, said Kirk Dorn, a spokesman for the charter school at 230 N. Kolmar Ave. in West Garfield Park.

The man was shot in the back in the 4500 block of West Maypole Avenue by another man who walked up to him at 12:30 p.m. Monday, police said.

After getting hit, he ran into the alternative charter school — about a half block away — for help, said Officer Nicole Trainor, Chicago Police spokeswoman.

"The victim, after he was hit, he did run into our school but he was not connected to the school in any way," said Dorn. "No students were near the shooting, the students were all safely in the school."

"He came to our front door and that's where the [executive director] gave first aid and then the school was able to call an ambulance."

Emergency responders brought the man to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he is listed in serious condition, according to Trainor.

No arrests have been made as the investigation is ongoing, Trainor said.
