Celebrate Women's History Month at Women and Children First

ANDERSONVILLE — Women and Children First will celebrate Women's History Month with a parade of events featuring some of the biggest names in literature.

In March, the independent book store at 5233 N. Clark St.,will be visited by Katherine Don, author of "Real Courage: The Story of Harper Lee," host a book signing with Tracy Chevalier, author of "At the Edge of the Orchard" and host a panel discussion on women in the world of superheroes.

Here's a list of some of the events happening in March:

• 7:30 p.m. Thursday: A Conversation Between Two Chicago Crime Fiction Writers

Libby Fischer Hellmann, author of "Jump Cut," and Lori Rader-Day, author of "Little Pretty Things," will host "a conversation about mysteries and the craft of writing them." Hellmann left a career in broadcasting to write gritty crime fiction. She's authored 12 novels and 22 short stories. Rader-Day is the 2014 Anthony Award winner for Best First Novel and a two-time Mary Higgins Clark Award nominee.

• 7:30 p.m. March 16: A Panel Discussion on the Legacy of Lois Lane and Women in the Superhero Genre

Lauren Burke, Tim Hanley, Anne Elizabeth Moore, Caitlin Rosberg and Katie Schenkel will discuss "the superhero genre through the lens of the heroines who have all too often been overlooked" including Lois Lane and Wonder Woman. Burke edits children's books and produces comics. Hanley is a comic book historian and the author of "Wonder Woman Unbound" and "Investigating Lois Lane." Moore is an international cultural critic.

• 7:30 p.m. March 22 at the Swedish American Museum, at 5211 N. Clark St.: Reading and Book Signing with Tracy Chevalier

Chevalier will discuss her new drama "At the Edge of the Orchard" about "a pioneer family on the American frontier." The book follows a family of seven trying to tame the patch of land where they settled, with plantings bought from John Appleseed. Chevalier also wrote "Girl with a Pearl Earring," which was turned into an Oscar-nominated film featuring Scarlett Johansson.

You must pre-order the book from Women and Children First to attend this event. Companion tickets, which allow you to bring a guest, can be bought with the book for $10. The book publishes March 15.

• 7:30 p.m. March 31: A Presentation and Conversation on "Real Courage: The Story of Harper Lee"

Katherine Don, author of "Real Courage: The Story of Harper Lee" will talk "about Harper Lee's legacy, the controversy over her second book, Scout as a hero for women and girls, and the enduring impact of 'To Kill a Mockingbird' on American culture and politics." Don is a Chicago-based journalist, author and editor who's work has appeared in Salon, the Huffington Post and the Atlantic.
