GARFIELD PARK — Two children and two adults are injured after a car crash caused by a Mercedes driver running a red light Saturday morning, police said.

At about 6:25 a.m. in the 300 block of North Hamlin Avenue, a 27-year-old man driving a Mercedes C300 ran a red light, said Officer Thomas Sweeney, a Chicago Police spokesman.

The Mercedes hit an Oldsmobile Regal in the intersection, and the Regal spun out and collided with a Chevrolet Town and Country, Sweeney said.

Two children who were riding in the Regal were ejected from the car and were transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital in critical condition, and a 25-year-old woman Regal driver was taken to Stroger Hospital in "stable" condition, according to police.

Police originally told the Tribune that the girl had died, but later said that she was in critical condition but still alive.

The 27-year-old Mercedes driver also was transported to Stroger Hospital in "stable" condition. Police said he is in custody and charges are pending.

A 53-year-old woman, who was a passenger, declined medical treatment at the scene. Police did not specify which car she was in.

Police in the Major Accident Unit are investigating, Sweeney said.
