SOUTH SHORE — The South Shore Opera Company will celebrate Black History Month on Sunday with a free performance of works by black classical composers at the South Shore Cultural Center.

The free performance at 4 p.m. Sunday at the cultural center, 7059 S. South Shore Drive, will feature works of classical composers that went on to inspire jazz and other musical movements.

Classical works by William Grant Still’s “Here’s One” and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s “Deep River” will be performed by acclaimed Chicago soprano Joelle Lamarre, classical violinist James Sanders, pianist Donald Neale and bassist Christian Dillingham.

Works by Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn and others will also be performed.

The performance kicks off the 2016 season for the South Shore Opera Company.
