UPTOWN — The Chicago Gay Men's Chorus will bring its "vivacious" drag show "Lipstick and Lyrics: Save the Unicorn Club!" to Uptown Underground this weekend.

As opposed to other drag shows that sometimes feature lip-synching, "Lipstick and Lyrics," which features 16 of the chorus members along 16 alluring dancers, won't contain any "as the queens will be singing live," according to a news release.

"We're getting to utilize the talents we have in the chorus and I'm so happy for that," said Marty Miller, a long-time chorus member who collaborated with artistic director James J. Morehead to create the show.

"A lot of people haven't" seen a drag queen sing live, said Miller, who directs the show.

During auditions, performers were asked to bring in their own singing material and almost all of it made it into the show, the release said.

"Inevitably, there will be at least one number that you fall in love with," Morehead said.

The show follows a group of drag queens who must rescue a struggling gay bar "through song and dance" after their bus breaks down outside the bar. Though all the songs that will be performed are a mystery, audience members can expect a variety show featuring "everything from sultry ballads to lively dance numbers, all mixed together with glamor, comedy and cheese," according a press release.

Performances will be at 8 and 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Uptown Underground, 4707 N. Broadway. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. for the 8 p.m. show and 9:45 p.m. for the 10 p.m. show.

General admission tickets are $25. VIP tickets are $55 and include a reception that begins at 7 p.m., reserved seating and a drink from the bar. Tickets are available here.

The Chicago Gay Men's Chorus was founded in 1983 and "is an inclusive, community-based performing arts organization that creates musical experiences to entertain and enlighten, inspire change, and build community," according to its website.
