COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A man was robbed outside a Gold Coast 7-Eleven on Sunday, prosecutors said.
The 26-year-old victim was passing a 7-Eleven near Clark and Division on Sunday night when Maliek Evans, 40, approached and asked for spare change, Assistant State's Attorney Erin Antonietti alleged during a bond hearing Monday.
The victim gave Evans a few dollars and kept walking — only to have Evans run after him and ask for more cash, according to an arrest report.
Evans had been standing with four other men, whom he used to intimidate the victim, prosecutors said. Evans allegedly claimed one of the men, 51-year-old David Lee, was former military and a gang member who would hurt the victim if he didn't hand over more cash.
At that point, the victim gave Evans the contents of his wallet, roughly $100, Antonietti said.
The victim called police, and officers were able to arrest three of the five men roughly 20 minutes later, about 8:35 p.m., in the 1100 block of North LaSalle Street, court records show. The two other men weren't found, Antonietti said.
Evans, of the 100 block of North Sangamon Street; Lee, of the 400 block of North St. Louis Avenue; and Richard Henderson, 48, of the 1600 block of West LeMoyne Street, are each charged with robbery.
Cook County Judge Peggy Chiampas on Monday set bail for each man at $100,000.
