UPTOWN — It was always Maja Haraslic's dream to own a children's clothing store.

In September, she made her dream a reality when she opened Cloud and Bunny, at 1604 W. Montrose Ave. just a block away from her home. She stirred up the courage when she became frustrated with paying for over-priced items when shopping online for her 3-year-old daughter, she said.

"I wanted to be a part of the community, not somewhere you make a gazillion bucks. I did everything by hand. I poured the concrete. This is a small production," she said.

The consignment store, which sells eco-friendly toys and books along with clothing for newborns to young teens, gives cosigners back 50 percent of what the clothing sells for.

Whatever doesn't sell in the store is donated to Cornerstone Community Outreach, 4628 N. Clifton Ave., a non-profit that helps "raise the quality of life for low-income residents" in Uptown since 1989, according to its website.

"I remember not having a coat. That's why I made an outlet for them," said Haraslic, a Bosnian refugee who came to America in 1996 and studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

She's lived in the area, which she loves, for the last 12 years, and she knows what moms in the area want, she said.

"I'm a mom so I understand what people need — affordable and cute," she said.

Clothes at the shop can range from $2.99 to $80 for a new winter jacket.

The shop is open from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
