UKRAINIAN VILLAGE — A stretch of Damen Avenue that is halfway between Wicker Park and Ukrainian Village and is somewhat of a coffee desert will perk up on Friday as it welcomes Dollop Bake Shop, a fast-expanding chain with six other neighborhood spots.

Located across from designer Anastasia Chatzka's clothing boutique, Dollop Bake Shop is on the ground floor of a condo building at 1000 N. Damen Ave., on the northwest corner of Damen Avenue and Augusta Boulevard.

Initially the bakeshop and espresso bar was aiming to open by mid February, many months past its first goal of June, owner Dan Weiss has previously said.

For its opening on Friday, the menu will be mainly just "a fully operational coffee shop" but new items are expected to be added each week and the cafe's entire gamut of offerings (breakfast sandwiches, lunch sandwiches, soup and a wide array of pastries by Chef Axel Erkenswick) will be fully available on March 1, a spokeswoman said.

In addition to the Damen spot, Weiss has three more Dollop cafe locations on the way: one in Hyde Park at 55th and University on the edge of the University of Chicago campus, and two in the Loop, at 55 W. Monroe and  225 W. Washington St.

All three new cafes are expected to open by September.
