RIVER NORTH — A key city panel has approved a developer's plan to build a 24-story apartment tower next to a century-old church in River North.

The Chicago Plan Commission on Thursday afternoon signed off on John Buck Co.'s proposed 245-unit tower at Franklin and Illinois streets. Dubbed 3Eleven, the project will also include street-level retail and 109 indoor parking spaces.

The developer is moving forward with the project at 311 W. Illinois St. after buying the site from Assumption Catholic Church, which sits next door. Buck will also spruce up the church's courtyard gardens and "priory" for offices and clergy residences as part of the deal.
