COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A South Side woman stole her own car from a police impound lot Monday before leading police on a chase through Englewood, prosecutors said.
It's not clear why 25-year-old Tatianna Allen's SUV was impounded at the Englewood police station, 1438 W. 63rd St.
But prosecutors allege Allen walked into the lot Monday night, got into her 1999 Ford Expedition and drove off — with the orange impound sticker still attached.
During a bond hearing Tuesday, Allen's public defender said a police officer gave Allen the keys to her car. Prosecutors said they weren't sure how the woman got into the vehicle.
Officers spotted Allen driving away and tried to pull her over on Campbell Avenue, according to an arrest report.
Allen ran five stop signs before eventually parking in the 6900 block of South Yale Avenue, where she got out of the SUV and tried to run into a nearby apartment, court records show. Officers arrested Allen outside the apartment about 10:40 p.m. Monday.
Allen, of the 8000 block of South Honore Street, was charged with criminal trespass to a vehicle, aggravated fleeing and alluding, running five stop signs and driving on a suspended license.
Cook County Judge James Brown on Tuesday said Allen could be released on her own recognizance if she qualified for the Cook County Sheriff's Office's electronic monitoring program.
If not, Allen would be held on $30,000 bail.
