DUNNING — Two girls were injured — one seriously — Friday morning when a car crashed into them near a Dunning school, police said.

The 7-year-old girl and a 14-year-old girl were walking in the 3400 block of Austin Avenue near Newport Avenue, just outside the Chicago Academy charter school, which includes both a high school and elementary school on its campus, officials said.

The driver of the car fled the scene of the accident after striking the girls just before 8 a.m., but was arrested a short distance away, said Chicago Police Officer Nicole Trainor, a spokeswoman for the department. Charges against the driver are pending, she added.

The younger girl was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Trainor said. Police did not have details on the 14-year-old girl's injuries.
