WEST RIDGE — Three men approached a car in the early hours of Feb. 10 and asked the passengers' gang affiliation before opening fire, according to a Chicago Police report of the incident.

A 20-year-old driver and his 21-year-old friend had parked near the corner of West Arthur and North Claremont avenues around 2 a.m., waiting for a friend, the police report said. Both victims told police that three men approached their car and one of them began asking who they represented.

The three made gang signs for the Latin Kings and Gangers Disciples, they told police, though both victims denied having any gang affiliations of their own, according to the police report.

The first man then began punching the driver in the face through the open window, causing the passenger to begin yelling at him to drive away, police said. As the men left, the gunshots began popping off behind them.

The 20-year-old victim was hit twice in the leg and shoulder, and his vehicle broad-sided several parked cars while he sped from the shooter in the 2300 block of West Arthur Avenue, the report said.

The 21-year-old passenger in the car told officers he had to help drag his friend from the driver’s seat to the back seat, where he laid him down and sped to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston for medical care, police said.

According to police, two additional cars parked on Arthur Avenue sustained damage from stray bullets, while the victim’s car was shot up over both driver and passenger sides. Other cars were damaged when the wounded driver side-swiped them with his car on the way out.

The victim was in "stable" condition at the hospital, police said. Officers toured the area of the shooting but did not make any arrests.
