CHICAGO — Temperatures will climb above freezing starting Monday, and they won't stop there, according to meteorologists from the Romeoville-based National Weather Service.

After hovering in the mid-30s the first half of the week, temperatures are forecast to reach into the 40s Thursday. By Friday, meteorologist Kevin Birk said, they'll likely blow past 50 degrees and could reach 55.

"We had an arctic air mass from Canada hovering over the area the past few days, but that's going to shift over to the Eastern Seaboard starting Sunday," Birk said. "That cold air is going to be replaced by a warmer air mass, especially by the end of the week."

Temperatures will start to dip again starting Saturday, Birk said, but they're likely to stay "on the milder side of average" for at least a few days after that.

"It doesn't look like we'll see any more arctic blasts," Birk said. "[Saturday] is probably going to be the coldest day we'll see for a while."

Throw in previous predictions of an early spring, and "for a while" might — just might — mean "until next winter."
