Chicago's Most Dangerous Intersections? Neighborhood Square Users Chime In

By Justin Breen | February 13, 2016 8:33am

CHICAGO — Scores of Neighborhood Square commenters provided input on Thursday's story about Chicago's most dangerous intersections for runners.

Local running store Fleet Feet Chicago released its list Wednesday night after receiving feedback from runners on Twitter and Reddit.

As of Friday afternoon, more than 80 NSQ comments discussed pro- and anti-runner feedback.

NSQ user jameswurm said: "Some of these intersections are ridiculous. Lasalle and Clark? North and Milwaukee? Runners are asking for trouble. Sure they can run wherever they like, but to choose to run in high density areas like those, and then act annoyed by the traffic is unreasonable. I see huffy runners bobbing around pedestrians waiting for crosswalks on Michigan into Grant Park, and can't believe they direct vocal annoyance at walkers."

NSQ user Chidaniel believes dangerous intersections are a citywide issue: "Unfortunately, nearly all intersection are dangerous for drivers, walkers and bikers as many drivers blow off red lights, turn against signals, drive while on their cell phones, or turn only looking for traffic and not looking in all directions. Walkers and bikers also have to obey traffic laws as well, and many do not. I suggest more traffic cameras and higher fines for violations. Not only would this generate more revenue for the city, it hopefully would also make the streets safer for all."

NSQ user matt-johnson noted: "I'm a runner and a cyclist. Streets are for cars and buses first. Yes you can run and bike on them, and they have the same rights, but it's up to each of us to look out for our own safety. Stop putting your personal safety in the hands of others. So tired of the war on cars. Makes me embarrassed as a runner, cyclist and driver."

Some users, like EastVillageEric, discussed specific intersections: "Augusta and Milwaukee is brutal. Cars traveling East on Augusta blindly make that right turn to the the expressway or Milwaukee right into the crosswalk and bike lane. Not to mention, that early in the morning the lights at that intersection are barely even a suggestion."
