HUMBOLDT PARK — One of the four ground-level parks spread along The 606 is expanding.

On Wednesday the City Council approved financing to expand Julia de Burgos Park, 1805 N. Albany Ave.

The city's Department of Planning and Development in 2015 bought the lot directly to the north of the current park for $260,000.

The new funding OK'd by the City Council in the form of a $235,000 Open Spaces Impact Fee grant will support environmental clean-up of the site before it becomes part of the park.

The work will include replacing topsoil, planting new grass and installing fences, which will all be completed this summer, according to the city.

The work will expand the park by .15 acres.

Open Space Impact Fees are charged to new residential developments and the money is used to help expand and improve parks citywide.

Julia de Burgos Park currently is the only park along the trail's western end; two other Humboldt Park parks, including one at the former Magid Glove factory, are under construction. Three other parks, Churchill, 1825 N. Damen Ave.; Walsh Park, 1722 N. Ashland Ave.; and Park 567 at 1805 N. Milwaukee Ave. are all in Bucktown.
