ENGLEWOOD — Lindblom Math & Science Academy students won’t feel the effect of a $208,300 budget cut, the school’s principal said.

Principal Wayne Bevis said he anticipated these cuts so he prepared by setting money aside at the start of the year. The Englewood school, at 6130 S. Wolcott Ave., will continue operating the same, he said.

“I made sure from the beginning of the year, knowing that there may be cuts coming, I put money aside. So for us, there won’t be a change for our students,” he said.

The students’ day-to-day education won’t be affected, but Bevis said he still would have liked to spend the money on ways to school them better, such as adding more technology in the classroom.

“That’s $208,000 that we could, should be spending on our students for arts, science, for math and enrichment,” he said. “That’s because the state values other students, outside the district more than ours.”

Chicago Public Schools is cutting $120 million across the district, blaming a state budget standstill.

Lindblom will see a 2.7 percent  budget reduction.

CPS is operating at a $1.1 billion deficit. CPS chief Forrest Claypool said that making the cuts wasn’t what he wanted to do, but they were needed.

“These painful reductions are not the steps that we want to take, but they are the steps we must take as our cash position becomes tighter every day — especially as the District relies on short-term financing to pay its bills," Claypool said in a statement Tuesday. "We are doing everything in our power to sustain the gains our students are making in their classrooms.”
