MOUNT GREENWOOD — S&T Provisions won't even be open Super Bowl Sunday, but the Mount Greenwood store still expects to capitalize on the big game.
The store specializing in "pizza set-ups" typically sees its third-busiest week of the year just ahead of the Super Bowl, said Scott Giaretta, owner of the shop at 3804 W. 111th St.
S&T's pizza set-ups include all of the fresh ingredients you'd need to make a pizza yourself at home, including crusts (thin, original or deep-dish), homemade sauce, freshly grated cheese and any other toppings.
S&T has been selling these set-ups as an alternative to frozen pies since 1960. One set-up makes three pizzas, and the thin-crust, Italian sausage pizza set-up is a steady favorite, Giaretta said Thursday.
"When the Bears were in it in 2007, we had our best day ever," Giaretta said, adding that Friday and Saturday are particularly crazy the week ahead of the Super Bowl.
The week of Christmas and New Year's Eve are the only two holidays more lucrative than the Super Bowl at S&T, Giaretta said.
Here's some more stats on S&T's big week:
Pizza set-ups sold: 1,500 (up from 800-1,000 on a typical week)
Cheese: S&T expects to go through about 2,000 pounds of cheese this week. Most of it will be from pizza set-ups, but customers also buy its cheese for other Super Bowl recipes, Giaretta said.
Sauce: 187 gallons of sauce (up from about 100 gallons on a typical week)
Meatball mix: 3-4 times the volume of meatball mix will be sold on Friday and Saturday
Roast beef: double the volume sold on Friday and Saturday
"The Super Bowl is really, really good for us," Giaretta said.
