Chicago Public Library Waiving Fines for People Who Bring in Overdue Books

By Tanveer Ali | February 4, 2016 10:35am

CHICAGO — Got overdue library books?

The Chicago Public Library will waive all fines if you return the books in the next two weeks.

Through Feb. 18, late fees will be waived on all materials — books, CDs or anything else — and it doesn't matter how long it was overdue.

The library's last amnesty program was in 2012 when the library received 101,301 overdue items (worth about $2 million) and waived $641,820 in fees, according to city officials. One of those books was due back in 1934.

The book was "The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde, which is no longer in circulation but in the library's special collections.

Before that, the library offered an amnesty in 1985.
