COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — The woman who allegedly broke into Derrick Rose's childhood home early Sunday faces murder charges after police fatally shot her accomplice.

The shooting happened about 4:40 a.m. Sunday after Breanna Patterson, 20, and Charles Smith, 29, kicked down a front door in the 7300 block of South Paulina Street — where the Bulls' star point guard grew up — to demand information about a robbery, prosecutors said.

According to authorities, Patterson and Smith — who rapped under the name "Fif Money" — were robbed three weeks prior and believed someone inside the house knew who was responsible.

Police rushed to the scene after receiving multiple 911 calls about an armed home invasion, Assistant State's Attorney April Gonzales said during a bond hearing this week.

Once officers arrived, Smith, who'd been carrying a .40 caliber semiautomatic gun, began to shoot at police, Gonzales said. Officers fired back, fatally wounding Smith.

Patterson, 20, now faces charges of murder and home invasion.

In Illinois, anyone involved in a felony that results in a homicide can be charged with murder, regardless of who actually pulled the trigger.

Cook County Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil on Monday ordered Patterson, of the 7200 block of South Wolcott Avenue, held in lieu of $1 million bail.

According to prosecutors, Patterson admitted that she knew Smith was armed with a gun when the pair kicked down that front door early Sunday. She also admitted that she saw Smith point and fire his gun at police, Gonzales said.

During Patterson's bond hearing, prosecutors laid out a timeline for Sunday's events.

It all started when Smith and Patterson knocked on a front door in the 7300 block of South Paulina Street about 4 a.m. Sunday, Gonzales said.

When a 22-year-old woman answered the door, Patterson began to yell at the woman, explaining that she and Smith had been robbed, and demanding details about the attack, prosecutors said.

At one point, Patterson pushed past Smith, knocking him backwards, Gonzales said. The tumble allegedly exposed Smith's gun, and the 22-year-old immediately closed and locked the front door.

At the time, there were six adults and one 5-year-old child inside the house, according to prosecutors. All seven residents were relatives, Gonzales said, and no one inside the home knew Smith or Patterson, or why anyone had robbed the pair.

Smith and Patterson proceeded to kick down the front door and trash the house, breaking windows and knocking over televisions, prosecutors said.

Several residents tried hiding, and at least three people called 911, according to Gonzales.

Smith is accused of pointing his gun at several adults and demanding to know who robbed him. The relatives begged Smith not to shoot, prosecutors said, and told him they didn't know anything about the alleged robbery.

When police arrived on the scene, Smith headed toward the front door, gun in hand, prosecutors said.

Multiple witnesses heard officers order Smith to drop his weapon, according to Gonzales. Smith instead fired multiple rounds at police, who exchanged fire, hitting Smith in the abdomen, she said.

Smith died on the scene, and police recovered his .40 caliber gun, court records show.

Patterson was not armed during the altercation.

She was placed into custody Sunday and first appeared in court Monday.
