WICKER PARK — Though pizza might be tried sustenance for Super Bowl Sunday, a chain of empanada restaurants headquartered in Wicker Park want sports fan to add baked pockets stuffed with savory and sweet fillings to their football watching diet.
"In Argentina, ordering empanadas when you are watching sports is a no brainer. It's a good finger food, no silverware, not even plates needed," said Nicolas Ibarzabal, one of three owners of 5411 Empanadas, which has two locations in Wicker Park including a commissary kitchen at 2045 W. North Ave.
Ibarzabel said last week he's not yet worked out a special deal for Super Bowl Sunday but imagines it could be something like getting six free empanadas for every two dozen ordered, a promotion he said worked well for last year's Super Bowl.
The empanadas cost $2.50 each and come in 12 varieties. 5411's Wicker Park North Avenue menu includes caramelized onion, bacon, dates and goat cheese, malbec beef and ratatouille.
Empanadas, which are baked and not fried, can hold temperature easily and are "the perfect delivery food," Ibarzabal said.
One of about 80 local restaurants to offer delivery through the new Amazon Prime app for food delivery, 5411 Empanadas also works with GrubHub for online deliveries, Ibarzabal said.
Originally started as a food truck, 5411 Empanadas is owned by Ibarzabal, Andres Arlia and Mariano Lanfranconi, who named their eatery for the International telephone calling code for Argentina, 54, and the Buenos Aires city code, 11.
In addition to Wicker Park spots at 2045 W. North Ave. and 1659 W. Division. St, in the lobby of the Holiday Jones hotel, 5411 Empanadas operates storefronts at 3715 Southport Ave. in the Southport Corridor and 175 N. Franklin St. in the Loop.
