PORTAGE PARK — The Silent Film Society of Chicago will return to Six Corners with a screening of the Charlie Chaplin classic "Shoulder Arms" at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

But the society won't be returning to its longtime home at the Portage Theater. Instead, the society will show the film starring Chaplin as a private in the Army who dreams of being a hero at the Filament Theatre, across the street at 4041 N. Milwaukee Ave.

The society was forced to find new venues to show its silver screen gems after the temporary closure of the Portage Theater in 2013, and did not return when the theater reopened in 2014.

The society, led by Dennis Wolkowicz, held screenings of movies from Hollywood's silent era in Des Plaines, Park Ridge and smaller theaters throughout Chicago.

Wolkowicz, who once ran the Portage Theater, will accompany the film on a theater organ under his nom de cinema Jay Warren.

In addition to the classic film from 1918, "Felix Turns the Tide" a Felix the Cat cartoon from 1922, will be shown.

Admission is free for members of the society and their guests, while tickets are $15.

Reservations are requested. For more information, email PAL2775@msn.com.
